In 1783 Charles Byrne (the “Irish Giant”), died, aged 22. His 7ft 7in (2.31m) height made him a celebrity in London. He wished to be buried at sea but the anatomist John Hunter reduced the corpse to a skeleton, which went on display at the Hunterian Museum in London; in 1941, during the Second World War, the UK government announced that clothes would be rationed. On March 15, 1949, the austerity measures were lifted. Siren suits became popular, which could be quickly pulled on over nightwear during air raids; in 1955 the Untouchability (Offences) Act came into force in India, to curb the practice of untouchability (caste-based discrimination). On September 2, 1976, the act was strengthened and its name changed to the Protection of the Civil Rights Act; in 1969 John Lennon and Yoko Ono recorded Give Peace a Chance during their second “bed-in” for peace; in 2015 the Eastern Star ship overturned on the Yangtze River in China during a severe thunderstorm, killing 442 people.
Nature notes
Fulmars can live for 50 years. Apart from when breeding on coastal cliffs, they spend their entire lives at sea. To equip them for the pelagic lifestyle, these cousins of the albatross have developed a skill thought to be very rare among bird species: they have a keen sense of smell. In fact, they can smell their food up to 15 miles away. Having found a food source — sand eels, crustaceans and trawler waste — these tubenose seafarers then pluck it from the water’s surface, or sometimes make shallow clumsy dives. The name fulmar means “foul gull” and comes from their defensive tactic of squirting a stinking oil at intruders threatening their nest.
